Como segundo teniente de voluntarios, Florencio Aulestia comenzó su servicio en la Segunda Compañía del "Regimiento Sagrado", al mando del coronel Emilio Alvarez. En su diario de notas, escribió, "A partir de entonces, he participado en varias escaramuzas, combates y batallas como soldado ciudadano y como teniente segundo." Después de varios meses de ardua marcha a través de la Cordillera de los Andes, las pequeñas victorias y reveses, la Ejército del Centro, finalmente obtuvo el control completo de la zona andina central, toma entonces contacto con el Ejército del Sur bajo el mando del General Francisco X. Once the peace and a National assembly to restore the constitutional government were established, the demobilization of volunteer regiments began. Lieutenant Aulestia, however, in October 25, 1883 received a transfer to the Third Battalion in the regular army and under the command of Colonel Modesto T. Burbano. There he served until the Second Infantry Battalion absorbed the third on June 6, 1884, again assuming command Colonel Burbano in Latacunga.
