James A. Aulestia

On 1995, Catholic Sister Deifilia Aulestia Navas, related to several visiting relatives her admiration and respect for her father. She treasured the conversations she had with him during his visits at the boarding school where she studied. She appreciated the fact that when she told him of her decision to stay in the convent and become a catholic nun, he respected her wishes and assured her of his total and unconditional support. Those days, to have a daughter or a son as part of a religious order was a source of great pride. As she entered the boarding school at a very early age, she lost contact with the rest of her family. On a letter written to James Aulestia in 1995, she wrote as follows. “I did not have the good fortune to know my grandfather, Jose Antonio Aulestia, nor my grandmother Mercedes Guerrero. In fact, I do not know their mothers’ surnames…Their children are: my father Florencio, my uncle Emigdio and my aunt Anatolia Aulestia. My father used to tell me that he had cousins, a doctor by the name of Jose Maria Aulestia, a lawyer by the name of Rafael Aulestia. The latter had five children; Ruben the medical doctor, Cesar the lawyer, Jose Maria the Architect and two daughters that had passed away. Another thing that my father told me was that our ancestors came from the Basque Country via Colombia. He also talked about an uncle by the name of Mariano Aulestia. He was the architect of the famous Basilica of “Las Lajas” in Colombia and the Basilica of “La Merced” in Quito.”
